DEFINITIONS
Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) – A person who has been awarded the CFA charter from the Association of Investment Management and Research (AIMR) that measures and certifies the competence and integrity of financial analysts. Candidates are required to pass three levels of exams covering areas, such as accounting, economics, ethics, money management, and security analysis.
CFP® and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM are certification marks owned by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standard, Inc and are awarded to individuals who successfully complete the CFP Board’s initial and ongoing certification requirements. In order to achieve and maintain certification, CFP® professionals must: 1) pass the comprehensive CFP® Certification Examination, 2) pass the CFP Board’s Fitness Standards for Candidates and Registrants, 3) agree to abide by CFP Board’s Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility and Rules of Conduct which put clients’ interests first, 4) comply with the Financial Planning Practice Standards which spell out what clients should be able to reasonably expect from the financial planning engagement, and 5) complete 30 hours of continuing education (including 2 hours of approved Ethics CE) every two years.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is a designation given to individuals who offer financial statement audits and other attestation services to help inform investors about the financial health of organizations. They also provide individuals and families with valuable knowledge and advice on taxes and financial planning. These professionals must have extensive education—at least 150 hours—pass a rigorous four-part exam and meet experience requirements.
Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) – A person or firm who, for compensation, provides advice to clients as to the value of securities or thepurchasing or selling of securities. RIAs are required to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission or a state securities regulator.
Form ADV – The uniform form for use by investment advisors to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission and state securities authorities. The form is updated at least annually and is also used to comply with SEC Rule 206(4)-4, which obligates investment advisors to disclose relevant financial and disciplinary information to clients.
